About Music
We meet with each of our classes for 50 minutes, once every six days. Our performing groups (band and chorus) meet at least two mornings per week in addition to their regularly scheduled music classes. Children who are enrolled in a performing ensemble also receive semi-private lessons once per week, to help them prepare for their upcoming chorus or band concerts.
In Indian Hill, we are very proud of our students and our music program. Music is a very important part of who we are. Any school-run assemblies have musical attributes to them. Music is part of our Week of Respect program, morning announcements, and Patriotic Day celebration. Our students love performing as a school and always look forward to events in which we get together to sing.
Our music program at Indian Hill is aligned with the NAfME National Standards and the New Jersey Core Content Standards. The students participate in a variety of activities to help them unlock their own creativity and style, as well as develop the skills necessary to analyze and evaluate different music.
The students experience music in many ways: performing (on instruments and with their voices), listening to performances, improvising, moving to the music, reading and writing music, and learning music in relationship to history and culture. Many of the songs that the students learn are folk songs--both American and international.
