Overview of our program
Students have access to many different gifted and talented services.
In the classroom, Mrs. Thomas provides exciting enrichment opportunities to all children, in the form of push-in lessons. Mrs. Thomas visits other teachers' classes regularly to infuse some special activities that foster team-building, executive functioning skills, and critical thinking skills beyond what is already offered in regular assignments. This enrichment is offered to all teachers, including special area teachers and special education classes, and the activities are skill-driven.
For students who have acquired content mastery, who may not necessarily be identified as gifted, Mrs. Thomas will work with content-area teachers to provide students with extension activities and alternative classwork that deepen those students' critical thinking skills. Students are offered services such as pull-aside academic acceleration and enrichment in the Advanced Learning Lab, in addition to learning contracts, extension menus, or independent study support, when needed.
The Holmdel Faculty receives ongoing training on the gifted students' needs throughout the school year. They learn about strategies and resources that support them with differentiated instruction and ensure each student is appropriately challenged in the classroom.
Students who qualify for additional services will receive academic and social support in the form of regularly-scheduled pull-out classes. This small-group instruction focuses on teaching identified students how to work in groups and communicate effectively, how to manage setbacks, and how to navigate emotional challenges associated with giftedness.
